Paper Capacitors
Physics - Capacitors Question?
Hi
This question is in my text book supposedly from an OCR past paper but I really can't see how the answer given is correct - any help would be great. I've scribbled a crude copy of the diagram on the link below, it's a 10V cell on the left and two 200 micro-farad capacitors on the right and a switch in the middle.
The question asks you to find the voltage across each of the capacitors when the switch is connected to X. It gives the answer as 5V each. But that can't possibly be true if there is also a 10 kilo-ohm resistor in the circuit. If each capacitor has a pd of 5V, that would imply that there is no pd at all across the resistor? I think they've drawn the resistor in the wrong place. If it were on the stretch of wire going downward from Y, that answer would work. Or am I just looking at this wrong?

When the capacitors are fully charged there is no current in the circuit and therefore no voltage dropped across the resistor. The supply voltage is therefore divided between the two capacitors. They are correct.
