Commodore Computers
What happens if someone plays a commodore/old computer tape in a regular cassette player?
I've always been curious about this one, though I don't own ay old computers. Back before hard drives they used actual cassette tapes. What would of happened if someone placed one of these in an actual cassette player? Would you hear noises or any weird sounds?
You will hear something that sounds like bursts of white noise. Actually, what you hear as audio, noise, is actually a finely modulated audio signal. The reason why is sounds like white noise is because of your ears. You are used to hearing amplitude modulation, which is what your voice is. What is on the tape is Phase Shift Keying, (PSK) which is a way of shifting the phase of a pure tone to represent digital data, 1's and 0's. This is very similar to what a telephone modem does when it comes to rates faster than 2400 baud. 2400 and below was tone shifting, called Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), switching between pairs of tones indicated the change of data from 0 to 1 and back to 0 again. 2400 and above is phase shift keying. One pair of tones was incoming data, with a 2nd pair being outgoing, which gave you a full duplex link. You realize that MODEM is actually an acronym for MOdulatior/DEModulator, right? The device modulates the outgoing signal and demodulates the incoming signal, digital to analog and analog to digital. In essence, it is a way to transfer data faster over the same audio frequencies that can be carried by a standard telephone wire or recorded on tape. If you have ever picked up a telephone extension on a line where a modem was in use, you would hear the exact same type of noise, actual tones if FSK, white noise like if PSK. DSL lines have filters that block the signals used by the DSL portion sounds from getting to your handset. Use the phone without the filter and you will hear the DSL signals. By the way, I have one of those old computers, that I built from a kit back in 1976, which is still in service today as a dedicated controller for the dampers and fans on my wood stove. The tape subsystem uses what was then called the Kansas City Standard.
